New Pantai Highway (NPE) Extension approved by gov’t – 15 km, Pantai Dalam to Jln Istana, ready 2029

There will be a new highway in KL as IJM Corp has received approval from the works ministry for the New Pantai Highway Extension (NPE Extension) and toll restructuring for the existing NPE. An offshoot of the NPE, the NPE Extension is a 15 km fully elevated route from the Pantai Dalam toll plaza to the Jalan Istana interchange via Jalan Syed Putra.

The RM1.4 billion NPE Extension, which will have a new toll plaza, will be fully funded by the concessionaire without any government funding. Construction work is expected to commence in the third quarter of this year, and the highway is targeted to be operational by 2029.

The NPE Extension will connect with the NPE, Sungai Besi Expressway (Besraya) and the upcoming Laluan Istana-Kiara Expressway (LIKE). IJM says that this integrated network is expected to divert about 40% of existing traffic from Jalan Bangsar towards the city centre, relieving pressure on some of KL’s busiest routes.

It added that the NPE Extension project also aligns with the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Master Plan 2040, which prioritises highway-to-highway connections that keep through-traffic out of the city’s core.

“This approval marks an important milestone in our efforts to improve urban mobility in the Klang Valley. NPE Extension is designed not only to disperse traffic more efficiently, but also to reduce travel time and support the everyday journeys of people and businesses by easing pressure on key city routes and complementing public transportation,” said Datuk Lee Chun Fai, group CEO and MD of IJM.

The company claims that beyond easing congestion, the project is expected to generate economic spillover benefits of approximately RM5.6 billion, unlocking growth for nearby developments such as Pantai Sentral Park and Bangsar South.

Features of the NPE Extension include support for the Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) tolling system, real-time CCTV monitoring, smart street lighting and a new lay-by with EV chargers. IJM says that the ‘toll restructuring’ of the existing NPE will see them maintain current toll rates until the expiry of the concession period.
